MONTREAL - The gloom of starting the season with three straight defeats hasnt descended on the Montreal Impact just yet. Mitch Wishnowsky Womens Jersey . The players and their new, as-yet winless coach Frank Klopas, were upbeat this week as they prepared to face the Union on Saturday in Philadelphia. "The effort and intensity have been very good," said Klopas. "Everybodys shown theyre ready to play. Those setbacks will go away if we keep working like we have been." There is reason for optimism, starting with the return of star forward Marco Di Vaio and midfielder Andres Romero from the three-game suspensions they incurred from a scuffle at the end of their playoff game in October in Houston. The 38-year-old Di Vaio, a 20-goal scorer last season, may help them end a goalless string that has reached 205 minutes after being shut out in their last two matches. "Hes a competitive person, but its for the right reasons — for the group," Klopas said of Di Vaio. "His ability to create, and wanting ball in difficult moments, and to score goals... dont mean anything to him unless it helps the team win." Di Vaio is likely to step in for Andrew Wenger, who had a goal in a season-opening 3-2 loss in Dallas while filling in as the lone forward. It was not clear if Romero would start in his usual left midfield position or be available off the bench. There were also reports this week that the club is close to signing a third designated player to go with the Italian Di Vaio and Argentine midfielder Hernan Bernarello. Ignacio Piatti, an attacking midfielder who usually plays on the left wing, is believed ready to ink a deal that would see him join the Impact in June from the San Lorenzo club in Argentina. The team that opened camp with no significant signings, despite a late season plummet from first to fifth place last season, looks ready to make some changes. They also added fullback Heath Pearce during camp. A former Major League Soccer all-star with the New York Red Bulls who is coming off hip surgery, Pearce saw his first game action off the bench in a 2-0 loss at home last week to the Seattle Sounders. "I feel healthy and fit," the 29-year-old Pearce said. "Its been a long process. I feel young again." It was uncertain if he will start at left back, where the teams first round pick in this years draft, Eric Miller, has been impressive. Pearce likes how the Impact have not hung their heads despite the losses. The team started the 2013 campaign with four straight wins. "I dont think theres cause for alarm right now based on our results," he said. "Ive been in situations before where seasons didnt start well and Ive see a complete change in attitude and things get really dark and negative, but here its been upbeat." Defence has been an issue as Montreal has conceded six goals while scoring only twice. They have been lively on attack, leading the league with 57 shot attempts and 20 on target, but aging centreback Matteo Ferrari and converted fullback Hassoun Camera have been overwhelmed at times on counterattacks and set pieces. The Impact are missing centre back Adrian Lopez, who is due to resume practising soon after knee surgery, and the oft-injured Nelson Rivas. They hope to fix their defensive problems against Philadelphia. Montreal is 3-1-1 with 10 goals against the Union scored since joining MLS in 2012. The Union (1-1-1), coming off a 2-1 loss in Columbus, made major off-season changes including the addition of American midfielder Maurice Edu and midfielders Vincent Noguiera and Cristian Maidana. But they also have injury issues on defence, with converted forward Aaron Wheeler now playing in the middle. Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins said the Union are a puzzle. "With the players they have, especially the new players theyve added, you dont know what youll get," he said. "You dont know if theyll be a high press team or if theyll sit back and counter or if theyll try to play possession. "So you just have to go in and play your game and make them adapt to you." The Impact start the season with three of four games on the road, but after Philadelphia they will be back at Olympic Stadium for their next two against New York and Chicago. Note _ The Impact have loaned 20-year-old midfielder Zakaria Messoudi to the Ottawa Fury of the NASL. The former Canada u20 player is a product of the Impacts academy. Deion Sanders Youth Jersey . According to the Globe and Mail, a decision between the NHL and the Players Association should come within the six months. "I can tell you, (a decision) shouldnt take all that long," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the Globe and Mail. Dee Ford Jersey . Saskatchewans Darian Durant is expected to miss the rest of the Roughriders season with a torn tendon in his right elbow. The 32-year-old, who will undergo surgery in the next couple days to repair the injury, was added to the teams six-game injury list Tuesday. . -- Nelson Cruz has only two hits in 15 at-bats against the Kansas City Royals this season. CLEVELAND -- If the Angels had to be diverted anywhere during their trip, Progressive Field was the perfect place. For Jered Weaver, its as comfortable as home. Weaver became the ALs first 16-game winner, and the Los Angeles Angels did all their damage against Clevelands Danny Salazar in one inning for their fifth straight win, 12-3 over the Cleveland Indians on Monday in a makeup game. Albert Pujols had a three-run homer in the ninth for the Angels, who hit four homers and are a major league-best 88-55. Weaver (16-8) improved to 7-1 in 11 starts at Cleveland, where he was unbeaten from 2008 until losing earlier this year. The right-hander allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. "Its always been a park Ive enjoyed coming to," Weaver said. "I know the history of the park. I remember as a kid, watching their teams in the mid-90s and they had the sellouts and those good teams. I just like coming here." Kole Calhoun hit a two-run homer and David Freese had a three-run shot in the fifth off Salazar (6-7), who shut out Detroit last week and had not given up a run in 21 consecutive innings. Los Angeles has won 20 of 26 and leads the AL West by 7 1/2 games. The Angels were forced to Cleveland on their only scheduled day off during a long trip and were playing a game rained out on June 18. Manager Mike Scioscia said his team was tired, and Weaver made sure the Angels didnt have to over-exert themselves. "There were a lot of guys who were soggy today," Scioscia said. "Our regulars have been playing a lot. Obviously, getting in late and getting up for todays game, Weav did d good job. He pitched a good game." Weaver said it was strange making one stop on the trip. "It would have been nice for it to be an off day, but its what you have to go through in a season," he said. "It hasnt happened to us too often. Its nice to come in and get a win." Lonnie Chisenhall hit a two-run homer and had an RBI single as the Indians, who swept the White Sox over the weekend, had their winning streak stopped at four. Salazar limited the Angels to two hitts through four innings before they teed off in the fifth. Mike McGlinchey Jersey. C.J. Cron opened the outburst with a single, went to third on Hank Congers single and scored when Collin Cowgill grounded out. Calhoun followed by hitting a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right for his 14th homer, giving the Angels a 3-0 lead. Salazar struck out Mike Trout, and Albert Pujols and Howie Kendrick singled before Freese connected for his seventh homer to make it 6-0. Weaver handled it from there on a mound that suits him well. The right-handers lost loss in Cleveland came on June 16, and hes 9-2 in 16 starts since then. "He commands, changes speeds, he doesnt give in, hes smart," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "He knows your lineup and what he wants to do." Chisenhall pulled the Indians to 6-2 in the fifth his 13th homer. Cleveland had Weaver reeling in the sixth with a two-out single, walk and Chisenhalls RBI single. But Weaver got out of the jam by retiring Yan Gomes on a fly to deep centre with two on. The Angels tacked on two runs in the seventh and three in the ninth when Pujols hit his 26th homer this season and No. 518 of his career. Hes three homers behind matching Hall of Famers Willie McCovey, Frank Thomas and Ted Williams at 521. RUNNING AMOK With their 14-4 win at Minnesota on Sunday, the Angels have scored 12 runs in consecutive games for the first time since 2006. TEXAS TWO-STOP The Angels began their 10-game trip with two games in Houston -- they lost twice to the Astros -- and theyll finish it will three games at Texas. ANOTHER NEW GUY: The Angels recalled RHP Jairo Diaz from Double-A Arkansas for an additional arm in the bullpen. TRAINERS ROOM Angels: OF Josh Hamiltons sore right shoulder kept him out of the lineup for the fourth straight game. Hamilton hasnt played since Thursday, when he received a cortisone shot in the AC joint. UP NEXT Angels: Los Angeles ends a 10-gamet rip that began Texas back in the Lone Star State when LHP Hector Santiago (4-7) starts the opener of a three-game set against Rangers RHP Colby Lewis (9-12).
